BRT has proliferated all over the world since the 1980s. More recently, it has been pursed in cities across the US. As a viable high capacity transit system, it can move riders quickly and reliably at a fraction of the cost of rail. Yet confusion still abounds throughout the country around what constitutes BRT and how it is different from bus priority or general bus improvements. ITDP developed a guide focused on issues specific to the US context from navigating the Buy America Provision, environmental impact assessments, fleet procurement, equity concerns, public engagement, economic development, institutional governance and funding sources. This webinar will highlight some of the salient lessons from the guide, drawing from case studies in Albuquerque, Hartford and Richmond. It will be most informative for US cities looking to implement a BRT corridor.
Aileen Carrigan is a consultant with ITDP’s US Program. Her research and consulting work focus on the design, implementation, and impacts of bus rapid transit. In 2008 she supported the implementation of Johannesburg’s Rea Vaya BRT, and subsequently studied global experience with BRT as a senior associate at the World Resources Institute. Aileen has co-authored research on the political and technical challenges of BRT implementation; as well as the social, environmental, and economic impacts of BRT. She holds a master’s degree in urban planning and bachelor’s in mechanical engineering.
