State Budget Wins for Means Tested and Fare Free Transit

On Monday, Governor Healey signed the fiscal year 2025 state budget into law. Funding in the budget for transportation includes an additional $110 million for Regional Transit Authorities—$30 million of which is for those agencies to operate fare free service. And in addition to $20 million for the MBTA’s low-income fare program, the budget stipulates that the MBTA conduct a feasibility study on a pilot program for fare free bus routes within the system.

Much of this funding has been made possible by the Fair Share Amendment. Read a more in depth analysis from our friends at MassBudget.
