Middays at the Meeting House- Boston’s Neighborhood Churches – Restoration Stories & Lost Treasures

The period from 1870 to 1940 was the great age of church building in Boston, when houses of worship were as lavishly ornamented as the grand mansions and public buildings of the Gilded Age. Traditional Protestant churches were flourishing, and the city was flush with immigrant groups looking for ethnic faith homes. Today the situation is reversed and many congregations are hanging by a thread, facing skyrocketing costs of building repair and few, if any, resources for preservation. Stained glass historian and preservation advocate Judy Neiswander will share success stories, discuss ongoing preservation challenges for Boston churches, and highlight some of the buildings, and their interior treasures, that have been lost forever.
