MassDOT’s project to replace the Massachusetts Avenue Bridge over Commonwealth Avenue in Back Bay (also known as the Tommy Leonard Bridge) will begin soon. MassDOT’s contractor, SPS New England, anticipates starting work the week of February 20 by closing the Commonwealth Avenue westbound bypass under Massachusetts Avenue. Vehicle and bicycle traffic will be detoured to the surface roadway.
The Commonwealth Avenue eastbound bypass will be closed in Spring 2017 and an advisory will be distributed notifying the public prior to the traffic shift. A full closure of Massachusetts Avenue over Commonwealth Avenue to install the new prefabricated bridge structure will occur over a weekend in mid to late July 2017 and will require detours. Advance notice will be provided before this work begins.
At this meeting, the project team will discuss plans, including traffic management and coordination with other projects in the area.
