Annual December StreetTalk Huge Success!

Our annual December StreetTalk last week was a hit! We were so thrilled to be joined by all our wonderful speakers, and to share a video cameo from Senator Ed Markey. We talked all about the big ideas in transportation that we aim to accomplish in the next 15 years (and hopefully sooner!), like free transit and more. Check out the recording to learn more!

Thanks to all of our speakers, our incredible partners at GBH Forum Network, and all of you for tuning in!

The Year Might Be Ending, but the Fight to Save Essential Transit Service Is Not

Despite strong opposition from our Transit Is Essential Coalition, elected officials, and all of you, on Monday, the FMCB still voted for serious service cuts that will reduce access to transit. Read this recap for a full picture of what was discussed.

Leadership is required from the Massachusetts Legislature to provide more funding to the MBTA to sustain full service and close their funding gap. Our Transit Is Essential Campaign is still pushing for legislation that provides meaningful short and long-term funding for the MBTA.

Bus Lanes Sweep through Greater Boston

Image: Davis Sq. Bus Lane

In a panel discussion hosted by TransitCenter in early December, our staff member Kristiana Lachiusa reminded listeners that 14 miles of new bus lanes have been implemented in Greater Boston this year.

Here are all the new bus lanes across the region:

  • Chelsea: Shared bus/bike lane -- Broadway
  • Everett: Shared bus/bike lane -- Sweetser Circle and Broadway
  • I-93 Tobin Bridge bus lane pilot
  • Lynn: Shared bus/bike lane on North Common St.
  • Malden: Shared bus-bike lane on Florence Street
  • Medford: Peak-only dedicated bus lane --Mystic Ave
  • Roslindale: Dedicated + shared bus/bike lane -- Washington St
  • Somerville: Shared bus/bike queue jumps -- Washington St + Davis Square

While these bus lanes are crucial to keep transit moving, we must continue to have robust bus service to use them. Bus lanes alone will not counteract the effects of potential service cuts.

LivableStreets Taking a Well Deserved Break - Support our Work in 2021!

After a challenging year, the LivableStreets team is taking a well deserved break to rest and recuperate. Our (virtual) office will close at the end of today and reopen January 4th. With this time to recharge, we’ll be ready to tackle all the big, important work coming our way in 2021.

Want to support all the work staff will be championing in the New Year? Consider supporting our 10 Day, 10K challenge -- all donations will be matched by our Board up to 10K! Although our challenge doesn’t technically launch until Monday, help us get a head start on meeting our goal!
