Innovative thinking can transform auto-centric streets into inviting public spaces. This webinar explores projects and programs in three communities that reclaim areas in the public right of way for people-friendly uses. Attend this webinar to learn how to turn transportation challenges into projects that build community and contribute to pedestrian and bicyclist safety, public health, and economic development. Speakers will discuss the barriers to implementing these projects, issues of planning, design, maintenance and cost, and lessons learned. Please note: this is a 75-minute webinar.

Featured projects include:

  • The Uptown Roundabout in Normal, Illinois, recipient of a 2011 National Award for Smart Growth Achievement for a Civic Space from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The roundabout manages traffic flow at a five-way intersection while bringing together residents in an attractive public space, diverting thousands of gallons of untreated storm water away from a creek, and contributing to the town's economic development. The roundabout serves as a central civic space for Normal, which had previously lacked a true town center.
  • San Francisco's Pavement to Parks Program, which reclaims street space for temporary, inexpensive and quickly installed parklets and plazas. Learn how the program works and about the city's plans to expand it, involve non-profits and community groups, and use the permitting process to create larger public spaces.
  • Portland's Intersection Repair Projects, on the frontier of DIY streets, which use the principles of placemaking to encourage citizen-led conversion of street intersections into public squares.
