Transportation

It is easy and fun to get around Boston by subway, bus, foot, and bike.

Subway (it’s the “T”) /Bus. Logan airport to downtown Boston or Cambridge is a short subway ride— get on the “Silver Line” at the airport to South Station, transfer there to the subway. Order a CharlieCard with “stored value”
online before you arrive, and use it to get the best fare while here: mbta.com.

Bicycles. Free bicycles to anyone who wants one while here– let us know if you want wheels, two!

ZipCar. A company called "Zipcar" provides cars for rent by the hour all over Boston; you will need to register online at least a week before you get here: zipcar.com.

GoLoCo. A new company just started that offers innovative ride sharing, check them out at GoLoCo.com.

Where to stay

Boston can get expensive, so it's best to make a reservation as soon as you can. Click here for a list of hotels and bed-and-breakfasts that are close by and accessible by public transportation, but there are many others. If you would like more guidance, just give us a ring and we'll help out!

Many people will be staying at the Hotel @ MIT, which is in Central Square right near both of our homes-- we have arranged for a discount, call (617) 577-0200 and mention our wedding.

Also, some of our friends here in town are happy to host out-of-town guests -- let us know if you would like us to arrange this.

Attire

Festive attitude, any outfit!

Gifts

Gifts are optional, your presence is the most important thing. We did take the liberty of putting together a list of suggestions for gifts we would enjoy. Click here to go to the gift suggestion website. The way it works is that if you choose to get one of the items, you must check it off on the website so it is not duplicated. Fun!

Formal invitations

Hopefully, you have yours by now. If not, let us know.

Things to do while you are in Boston (Click on the Blue titles for links to websites)

The Great Outdoors in the City

Saturday June 15th is the Cambridge River Festival -- a great outdoor festival by the river (same location as our Sunday Picnic, right near Harvard Square). There will be music, crafts, food, street performers, lots of people, and the street is closed to traffic.

Arnold Arboretum is a big beautiful, quiet place, yet accessible by the T.

Mount Auburn Cemetary is historically significant (lots of famous people like are resting here), and beatifully landscaped. Easy to get to from Harvard Square.

Charles River Esplanade is the great grassy areas and bike path along the river. You can jog, rollerblade, stroll, cycle, sunbathe (weather permitting), play frisbee, hang out, read, nap, picnic, walk from the esplanade to the science museum or to the public gardens... so many options. The downtown part of the esplanade is best reached by going to the Charles/MGH T station and crossing the pedestrian brige down to the river. You can also bike all along the esplanade from downtown Boston, past Cambridge, and into Watertown if you are motivated. The website should have links to a map of the river.

Minuteman trail is a bike path the goes for 12 miles from the Davis Square or Alewife T stop in Cambridge to some really pretty towns west of Boston with lovely stopping places on the way. You could continue biking aournd the towns out there -- talk to us if you want to do this and we'll give you bike maps that show where the ice cream parlors are. The path is also good for rollerblading, strolling, and jogging (you don't have to go all 12 miles).

Boston Public Garden, Boston Common, and The Freedom Trail are all located right near the Park Street T station. The website link has links (left hand column) with more information about these great things and the historically significant buildings around them. The public garden is lovely, has swan boats, and the "Make Way for Ducklings" Statues. The Freedom Trail leads you along a path of Boston's history, and the Boston Commons is a big fun park with lots of people.

Newbury Street is a fancy street with lots of fancy shops, galleries, sidewalk cafes, and the like. If you're in a browsing mood, it's very fun! There are also a few great clothing consignment shops (The Closet is my favorite) where there are bargains to be had (both men's and women's clothes). You can easily walk to Newbury Street from the Public Garden.

Museums (all accessible by the T):

Institute for Contemporary Art (ICA)-- fabulous new building, great exhibitis

Boston Museum of Science -- fun for the whole family

Boston Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) -- where the art is fine

Boston Children's Museum -- very fun for little children and big children

MIT museum -- neat-0 stuff! Right in our neighborhood in Cambridge.

Museums at Harvard -- they have a number of great museums that are lovely, all in Harvard Square in Cambridge.
