Issue #46 / May 2010
The monthly e-newsletter of the LivableStreets Alliance
Greetings,
It is bike week 2010! This week you can celebrate lots of exciting multi-modal successes - bike lanes and bike boxes on Comm Ave, bike parking at South Station that encourages public transit, and new infrastructure developments for our bridges and roads.
The more people biking, walking, taking transit, and talking about it, the better. Bring a friend to one of the following events.

Events
Tues, May 18, 7:00-9:00 PM
@ NEXUS, 38 Chauncy Street, 7th floor, Boston
Get out your pens, tracing paper and aerial maps and come to NEXUS for a design charette sponsored by LivableStreets on integrating cycle tracks into the urban fabric.
A cycle track is a bicycle facility that separates bicycles from automobile and pedestrian traffic. It combines the user experience of a separated path with the on-street infrastructure of a conventional bicycle lane. Danish research has shown that cycle tracks can increase bicycle ridership 18 to 20 percent, compared with the 5 to 7 percent increase found resulting from bicycle lanes.
The event begins with presentations by Anne Luske from the Harvard School of Public Health and Peter Furth from Northeastern University. Then, together, we'll all dig in - architects, engineers, urban planners, environmental professionals, advocates - for a collaborative exercise integrating cycle tracks into specific locations in metropolitan Boston. We'll close with a report back on each group's work, and conclude with a discussion of the role that cycle tracks could play in the current LivableStreets Better Bridges Campaign.
Space is limited as we are aiming for a diversity of types of professionals and advocates. Register here >>>

Construction of new bike cage at South Station -LivableStreets and MBTA General Manager to speak
Wed, May 19, 9:30 AM
@ South Station (Atlantic Ave/Essex St entrance)

LivableStreets is working closely with the MBTA to improve and expand bicycle parking facilities at our stations to promote multi-modal transportation.
All great bicycling cities are great transit cities. LivableStreets believes that to remain a competitive, world-class city, Boston needs a world-class transportation network - one that makes our city a better place to live, work, and play. One success we are celebrating this week is the construction of a new bike cage at South Station.
On Tuesday, LivableStreets and other bike advocacy groups join General Manager Rich Davey at South Station for a brief speaking program. GM Davey will announce the winner of the bike cage renaming contest and introduces a bike coach to the Rockport Commuter Rail line.
