Rush Hour Challenge

What is the best way to get from downtown Boston to one of the city’s many surrounding neighborhoods? The Rush Hour Challenge seeks to answer this question with a friendly challenge between people driving cars, riding bikes, taking the MBTA, bike-sharing with a Hubway, and using just their feet to get from downtown Boston to Davis Square in Somerville.

The challenge is meant to highlight Metro Boston’s rapidly growing need for better and more diverse transportation options. With each of the participants facing hectic and often dangerous traffic conditions, confusing intersections, and more--this will truly be a challenge--one that thousands of people face daily as they go to work, run errands, or simply get around the city.

Each participant will start at MassDOT's Park Plaza office in downtown Boston and attempt to be the first to arrive safely in Davis Square. Opportunities are available for reporters to participate in the challenge or shadow one of the participants.

Please join the crowd at Redbones for live coverage of the race and the Rush Hour Challenge party put together by MassBike and the New England Mountain Bike Association (NEMBA). Coverage will begin at 5:15pm. A ceremony to announce the results will take place at 6:30pm. And, the party will be going the whole time!

Admission to the party will be $15 and includes:
1 meal ticket
1 drink ticket
1 raffel ticket
Free bike valet

The proceeds from ticket sales will benefit MassBike and NEMBA.

You are also welcome to participate in the challenge as a tag-along participant to the official challengers. You can join us at MassDOT for the start of the race at 5:15pm and commute to Redbones by car, bike, MBTA, or foot!
