This presentation will explore pedestrian safety concerns related to signalized intersections and provide guidance for effectively accommodating pedestrians at these intersections. Issues such as appropriate signal timing, signal phasing such as leading pedestrian intervals, pedestrian-friendly signal-phasing, and countdown signals will be explored, as well as appropriate countermeasures for pedestrian crash problems. Innovative measures, such as automated pedestrian detectors, will be discussed. Participants will gain an understanding of pedestrian safety concerns at signalized intersections, and will be able to address these concerns through appropriate treatments.
